Literacy Coaching

Stronger Readers. More Confident Learners.

Individualized Literacy Coaching helps children build the skills, habits, and confidence they need to become stronger, more independent readers.

Every child is different. Some struggle to decode unfamiliar words. Some read accurately but slowly. Others can read the words on the page but have difficulty understanding or remembering what they have read. And sometimes a child has simply become frustrated or discouraged and needs a fresh approach.

Literacy Coaching begins by figuring out where your child is now, what's getting in the way, and what we can do next.

The lesson is where we diagnose, teach, practice, and adjust. The growth happens throughout the week.

A Different Approach to Reading Support

Literacy Coaching is more than help with homework or another weekly tutoring session.

We work individually with each child to identify strengths, uncover areas that need attention, and build a focused approach around that particular learner.

Depending on your child's needs, sessions may include work in:

  • Phonics and decoding

  • Spelling and word patterns

  • Fluency and expressive reading

  • Vocabulary

  • Reading comprehension

  • Writing and language skills

  • Reading confidence and independence

There is no single program that every student moves through in the same way. Instruction changes as the child changes.

Is Literacy Coaching Right for My Child?

Literacy Coaching may be helpful if:

  • Reading regularly becomes frustrating or discouraging.

  • Your child guesses at unfamiliar words.

  • Reading seems unusually slow or labored.

  • Your child reads the words but struggles to explain what they mean.

  • Spelling or foundational sound and letter patterns remain difficult.

  • Your child has lost confidence as a reader.

  • You feel your child would benefit from more individualized attention.

  • You simply want to give a developing reader a stronger foundation.

Children do not need a diagnosis or formal school referral to begin Literacy Coaching.

How It Works

We begin with an individual meeting that may last up to 60 minutes. This gives us time to talk with the parent, read and work with the child, and begin identifying strengths, challenges, and priorities.

From there, we develop an individualized approach and continue adjusting it as the child progresses.

Most students meet once each week for approximately 30 minutes. Longer or more frequent sessions are available when appropriate.

Whenever possible, more frequent contact can be beneficial. We recognize, however, that family schedules and cost make weekly coaching the practical choice for many families.

Parents Are Part of the Program

One of the most important parts of our approach happens outside the Studio.

Thirty minutes of focused instruction can accomplish a great deal—but it cannot substitute for regular reading throughout the week. That's why Literacy Coaching at Honett Studio includes a partnership with parents.

Families are asked to make approximately 20 minutes of appropriately leveled reading, at least five days each week, as a normal part of the child's routine. More reading is encouraged.

We also help parents understand what to listen for, what to encourage, when to help, and how to support a child without turning reading into a nightly struggle.

All Literacy Coaching families complete a simple Parent Partnership Agreement when enrolling so that the coach, parent, and child begin with the same expectations.

Individual Attention. Practical Goals.

Our goal is not to promise a particular test score or force every child through the same curriculum.

Our goal is to understand the reader in front of us.

We identify the skills that need attention, teach them directly, practice them purposefully, and continually adjust as the child grows.

Over time, we're working toward something larger than completing an assignment or passing a test: a child who can approach reading with greater skill, independence, understanding, and confidence.
