The Great Learning Adventure

When we first set out, we didn’t know where to start.

When we first set out, we didn’t know where to start. I understand now that this sense of bewilderment is not at all uncommon.

But we had a child of nearly school age (and now another who will be that age in just a couple of short years) and, as lovers of knowledge and educational veterans ourselves, we weren’t sufficiently satisfied with the other options available to us. And so we set out on a family homeschool journey, to help our daughter as she develops into a more complete person and a lifelong learner.

What I believe even more now, a few years in, is that for intentional parents who are seriously focused on their child’s education and who are curious about alternative schooling, it is absolutely worth going for it. This experience has been and continues to be for our family not only a fantastically successful educational pathway, but a joyful, surprising, holistic adventure that we are taking together and that has brought us closer as a family.

‍There are so many ways to educate well. I have come to believe that it’s primarily about deep intentionality. Everyone’s adventure is different. But in the end, intentional parents know their kids the best.

What follows are notes about our own family adventure into alternative schooling with our now-six-year old daughter and six-month-old son.
